A kind-hearted woman discovered a pregnant dog in the shelter who was in urgent need of someone to step in and save their lives. The mother dog was facing euthanasia, and the woman couldn’t bear to let that happen. Ava, a Chow mix, had been found wandering the streets and was brought to the shelter in hopes of finding safety. However, she was facing the heartbreaking fate of being put to sleep to make room for more dogs. Despite her pregnancy, no one seemed to care. Luckily, the woman arrived just in time to prevent the tragic end of euthanasia for Ava and her puppies.
When Ashlee Holland first encountered Ava at the shelter, she felt an instant bond with the dog and knew she had to adopt her in order to give her a chance to survive. Being a mother herself, Ashlee’s connection to Ava was immediate and strong. However, little did she know what was in store when she took Ava to the vet for a check-up. The vet’s shock at the X-ray results left Ashlee anxious, as he warned her to prepare for a potentially record-breaking number of puppies from Ava. As the night turned into morning, Ava labored tirelessly to bring her puppies into the world.
In just a short span of time, she gave birth to five adorable puppies. After taking a brief break, an hour later she welcomed two more into the world. With the contractions subsiding, her owner assumed it was the end of the birthing process and cleaned her up. Ashlee excitedly anticipated becoming a proud grandmother to seven little bundles of joy.
However, Ava’s journey into labor had just started. There were still 8 more puppies on the way, and there was more excitement yet to come!
After some time had gone by, the courageous and incredible mother successfully welcomed her final three adorable puppies into the world. Ashlee shared on Facebook, “It was my first experience delivering puppies, and I had no clue what to anticipate! In reality, only seven of them arrived on the 25th, while the rest made their appearance on the 26th.”
Thankfully, despite the challenges, every single puppy was in good health and thriving at a rapid pace. Ava proved to be an exceptional mother to her litter of 18 pups, while Ashlee truly became the hero that saved the lives of 19 furry companions.
Unfortunately, he later shared that the tiniest of the bunch, named Dayton, did not survive the night.
“It’s heartbreaking that Dayton didn’t make it, but these things can happen. The mother had an impressive 18 babies in her belly, all relying on her for nutrients. Considering she spent the first half of her pregnancy homeless, it’s a miracle that all 18 babies made it to birth,” Ashlee commented. Rest in peace, little Dayton.
Ava continues to shine as a fantastic mother, single-handedly feeding her litter of 17 puppies who are all breastfeeding without any issues. They will soon be ready to find loving forever homes. Ashlee affectionately named the puppies “the 18 royals.” Now, we introduce them to you, starting with Cookie. Prepare to be overwhelmed with adoration!

Afterwards, Ashlee posted heartwarming photos of the puppies in their new homes. And now, half a decade later, they have grown up into beautiful dogs.

Who would have thought that the crazy moment of giving birth to 18 puppies would spark a passion in me to continue helping pregnant and nursing mothers.” Ava, the dog who inspired Ashlee, is still by her side and has been spayed.
