Gavel’s Journey: From Police Academy Rejection to Embracing a Fulfilling Career and Life

Becoming a police dog is a prestigious role that demands extensive training and commitment. These furry officers must attend the police dog academy and receive specialized instruction to handle dangerous criminals.

Once upon a time in 2016, there was a cute little German Shepherd puppy named Gavel. At just six weeks old, he was among the many police puppies being trained in Queensland, Australia. With a prestigious lineage of working police dogs, Gavel seemed destined for a successful career in law enforcement.

However, life had different plans for Gavel. Instead of chasing down criminals, he discovered his true calling – receiving belly rubs and ear scratches. Despite flunking out of the police academy, Gavel found himself in an even better position as the Vice-Regal Dog, where he could just be himself and enjoy the finer things in life.

So, from a police dog drop-out to a beloved canine companion, Gavel’s story is a reminder that sometimes, the unexpected path leads to the most fulfilling adventures.

In April 2016, Gavel arrived at the Government House in Queensland with hopes of joining the prestigious Queensland Police Service Dog Squad. However, it soon became evident that Gavel’s interests lay more in being pampered with pats and treats rather than going on patrols. Despite not having the aptitude for police work, Gavel endeared himself to the Government House family during his year-long training.
When the handlers’ report came back stating that Gavel wasn’t suited for frontline duty, the Governor stepped in and decided to give him a new job. In February 2017, Queensland’s first Vice-Regal Dog position was created, and Gavel was appointed to this honorary role, where he continues to be a beloved member of the Government House team.

He even playfully signed his own contract! How adorable!
Gavel’s main responsibilities included assisting the Governor, the Honorable Paul de Jersey, in fulfilling important constitutional, ceremonial, and community duties such as greeting guests, leading tours, attending formal events, and of course, being incredibly cute.
During special occasions, Gavel proudly wears his custom-made ceremonial coat adorned with the state emblems of Queensland.
In fact, as Queensland’s official Vice-Regal Dog, Gavel had to upgrade his ceremonial coat four times. The earlier versions also featured the insignia of the Queensland Police Service.
This lovable pup has not only captured the hearts of everyone at Government House but has also shown that there are many different paths to success.
It serves as a reminder that sometimes failure is a necessary step on the road to success.
Gavel continued to enjoy his fabulous life at one of Brisbane’s most prestigious residences, proudly displaying the symbols of the State he represents.

Gavel didn’t just hold the important title of being the State’s inaugural Vice-Regal dog; he was also the main character in an illustrated children’s book. The book tells the story of Gavel’s quest to find where he belongs in the world and his ultimate mission.

Towards the end of October 2021, the Governor of Queensland’s official Instagram page announced that Gavel, the German Shepherd, had retired from his duties after serving for a whopping 40 years. The lovable canine can now enjoy a well-deserved break after a long and dedicated career.

Throughout his time serving at the Government House, Gavel was showered with love not only from His Excellency and Mrs. de Jersey, but also from his handler and companion who will continue to look after him in his retirement. Gavel’s friendly demeanor won over the hearts of everyone he met, and although he didn’t become a police dog as planned, he carried out his vice-regal duties with excellence.

His role included warmly welcoming guests and ensuring they felt at ease during their visits. And if you’re curious about Gavel’s current whereabouts, you’ll be happy to know that he is still living at the Government House property in Brisbane, enjoying a well-deserved break filled with plenty of love, treats, and belly rubs.

Now, let’s take a moment to reminisce on some of Gavel’s favorite moments during his time at the Government House.
