One such disturbing incident took place in Campobasso, Molise-Italy, shedding light on the cruelty that some are capable of towards animals.
Let me tell you about Ricky, a lovable hunting dog who was the perfect companion to his family for many years, meeting all their needs without fail. However, as time went by, Ricky’s once boundless energy started to fade, and his family no longer saw the same benefits in keeping him around. They made the heart-wrenching decision to stop providing food for him.
Left with no other option, Ricky resorted to eating stones in a desperate bid to stay alive. His health deteriorated rapidly, and it was clear that he needed immediate medical attention in order to survive. Ricky is a hunting dog of the Setter breed, and his story is a poignant reminder of the importance of caring for our loyal animal companions.
Thankfully, the little dog was saved by the Ugda del Molise group, which works to find loving homes for the neediest dogs. Ricky, as he was later named, was in a dire state when rescued – he was bald, battling leishmania, a disease passed on by mosquitos, and weighed just 8 kilos. He also had issues with his salivary glands and worn-out teeth from eating stones to survive. Ricky is believed to be around six years old.
The man’s health condition was quite severe, and it required a lengthy and careful treatment process for his caregivers to start noticing significant improvements. According to a post on the organization’s Facebook page, his hair has started growing back and he has managed to double his weight in just a couple of weeks, now weighing 19 kilos.
Additionally, there has been improvement in his condition related to the salivary glands. The organization mentioned, “We discovered that simply putting him in the car gets him excited, which leads to increased adrenaline levels that help the gland deflate without the need for aspiration.”
The group has made a tremendous effort to enhance Ricky’s well-being, and now his health has improved significantly. He was neutered and received therapy to help him move on from his difficult past. The organization now hopes to find him a loving home where he can experience the peace and comfort of a real family.
