A Famished Stray Pooch: Emaciated and Helpless, Unable to Stand from Hunger and Thirst

When Barilla arrived at a cat and dog rescue center in Granada, Spain, she was severely underweight and had numerous internal organs that were not functioning properly. In addition, her muscles were weak, preventing her from walking, and she was paralyzed in one area of her body.

The staff at the center were concerned about Barilla’s chances of survival, as she weighed just 7.2kg and was in critical condition. Even being just one night late in getting help could have been a matter of life and death.
Due to her inability to stand on her own, the staff provided Barilla with a support to help her strengthen her muscles. She was also given continuous hydration for 6 hours before they introduced any nutritious food.
Barilla had scratches on all four of her legs from crawling on the ground.
After receiving water for 6 hours, Barilla was able to stand up and drink, but her strength didn’t last very long.

Barilla has put on 4kg within a week thanks to the care and therapy she has received, but she still struggles to walk or stand for long periods and frequently topples over. It took another 6 weeks before Barilla began eating properly, yet she was eventually able to run and jump around like any other lively pup. The staff was touched by Barilla’s strong commitment to her recovery.

Eduardo Rodriguez, a 37-year-old shelter owner, fell in love with Barilla the moment he saw her and decided to adopt her. These days, Barilla enjoys life in Rodriguez’s home on the outskirts of Granada, where she lives with his wife, their 14-year-old daughter, and five other furry companions. After spending months on the streets, Barilla finally has a place to call her own.

Anh Rodriguez shared that this was his first time adopting a dog since losing one of his furry companions in a tragic accident five years ago. He mentioned being amazed by her strong will to survive and feeling an instant bond with her from the moment they met.

Since the start, Anh Rodriguez and Barilla have shown a strong bond filled with love and dedication. Barilla’s recovery has been outstanding; within just four days of being rescued, she has been devouring 5-6 meals daily and putting on 1kg every day. Barilla’s weight has now hit 20.8 kg, and she is nearly fully healed.

The people in the community found Barilla and alerted the authorities and rescue center. Barilla, a pup of just ten months old, was taken in by rescuers. The authorities are currently investigating to find out who is responsible for abandoning the poor dog in such a state.
