“From Recovery to Recreation: A Black Lab with a Cleft Lip and Palate Gets a Splash of Joy”

Meet Felix, a loveable black Lab with a contagious smile and a heart of pure gold. Despite being born with a cleft lip and palate, this furry friend has faced some tough hurdles in life. However, this uplifting tale follows Felix’s evolution from a delicate pup battling for his life to a lively and joyful dog making the most out of every day.

After surgery, this Black Lab with a cleft lip and palate can finally play in water

Following a life-saving surgery, this lovable Black Lab named Felix, who was born with a cleft lip and palate, is now able to enjoy splashing around in the water without any hindrances. Felix’s journey from survival to thriving is truly remarkable.

At just 11 days old, Felix faced rejection from his mother due to his physical condition, leaving him in a perilous state. Thanks to the intervention of Jamie, a compassionate animal rescuer, Felix received the round-the-clock care he needed to combat aspiration pneumonia, a result of his inability to nurse properly. Jamie tirelessly tube-fed Felix for seven weeks, providing him with the necessary care to ensure he survived and recovered.

Although he conquered his initial struggles, Felix continued to face obstacles due to his congenital defect. In addition to difficulties in eating, drinking, and breathing caused by his cleft lip and palate, Felix also had to contend with other health issues, such as digestive problems resulting from his colon being incorrectly positioned and vision impairment due to only having one functional eye. Despite these challenges, Felix has shown incredible resilience and continues to thrive under the care and love of his dedicated rescuers.

A transformative procedure and a fresh start
With the goal of providing Felix with the best life possible, Jamie made the decision to go ahead with corrective surgery. At just 14 months old, Felix underwent a complex operation in January to fix his cleft lip and palate. Not only did the surgery improve his ability to eat and drink normally, but it also greatly enhanced his overall quality of life.
Although Felix encountered some bumps in the road after the surgery, like developing a neurological tic possibly from the skull shifting during the procedure, he is now learning to navigate this new obstacle with the support of his caring family and innovative treatment methods.
